The name of Albufeira originated from the Arab AL-buhera, which means castle of the sea, owing to its location along the coast, or alternately al-Buhayra, for the lagoon, in reference to the lagoon that formed in the lowlands.

Albufeira is now the largest resort town in the Algarve  - Albufeira is a city and seat of its own municipality in the district of Faro. Located in the Southernmost Portuguese region of Algarve. It is 250 kilometres (160 mi) from Lisbon and is within proximity of Paderne Castle. Lagos is located 30 kilometres (19 mi) to the west, and Faro 45 kilometres (28 mi) to the south-east.

Praia da Falésia

Praia da Falesia is home to one of the longest beaches in Portugal and this means there is plenty of space to sunbathe on with six kilometres of golden sand! Praia da Falesia stretches from Olhos de Água in the east to Vilamoura in the west.

Known by the locals as 'beach town' and preserving something of its traditional Portuguese lifestyle. Backed by cliffs, falesia, is Portuguese for cliff, the contrast between the dark red and white sandy cliffs topped by green pines against a blue sky is incredibly beautiful and makes it one of the most unique beaches in Albufeira.

The beach is accessed by steps that lead down from a clifftop car park. Praia da Falesia is perfect for long walks, sunbathing and practicing water sports including; kayaking, jet skiing and parasailing. There is also a trail above the cliffs where you can hike or bike all the way to Vilamoura.

The sheer size of the beach and the laid-back atmosphere of the town contribute towards making this one of the more peaceful corners of the Algarve, although it is well-served by several top-class golf courses, a smattering of restaurants and bars.

Praia da Coelha

Praia da Coelha is located west of Albufeira Old Town, surrounded by yellow cliffs, coelha is Portuguese for rabbit the beach considered one of the most picturesque in this area. Praia da Coelha is a beach close to the village resort of Sesmarias the beach has fine golden sand with seashells and clear blue water with coral reefs, good for snorkeling.

To access the beach requires a short walk along a footpath from the car park which passes through Olive trees, ancient Carob trees and Bamboo groves. At the end of the footpath the beach is reached down a paved ramp with wooden steps leading down to the sand. There is also a raised board walk running west towards a small beach bar and restaurant which has toilets and a shower. The cove has fine golden sand and some rock formations. Within walking distance of Praia de São Rafael.

Praia de São Rafael

Praia de São Rafael, offers crystal clear, shallow waters and silky soft golden sand making this location one of the most popular beaches in the Albufeira area. The beach is just far enough away from the resort town to not be overrun, but close enough to be within easy reach.

Set in a pretty bay, flanked by tall ochre coloured limestone cliffs São Rafael is reminiscent of many of the beaches along this stretch of Algarve coast. The beach is home to an array of wonderful rock formations carved by the wind and waves over the millennia. Some of these rocks have evocative names such as Ninho das Andorinhas (the Swallow’s Nest) and Ponte Pequena (the Small Bridge). There are also a number of caves and grottoes to explore here.

If exploring is really your thing then this is perfect snorkelling territory - as good as it gets on the Algarve. There are also various organised excursions by kayak or stand-up paddle board to explore the neighbouring coves and coast.

There are viewpoints providing breathtaking vistas, a huge parking lot, a restaurant, a kiosk selling beachwear and souvenirs, water sports with good prices, beach chairs and umbrellas for hire and even a masseur. Pets, caravans and camping are not permitted.

São Rafael is wheelchair accessible, very popular among locals and tourists as well as with families with kids.

What we like most of Praia de São Rafael are the splendid cliffs and views that they provide. It’s definitely one of the most beautiful and best beaches in Albufeira.

At lower tides there is a second little cove you can walk to from São Rafael which offers a little more seclusion than the main beach. You can also stay on the second section, which has more shade because of the cliffs and is much quieter

Praia dos Arrifes

Praia dos Arrifes, from the parking lot you can already imagine that you’re arriving at a very special beach. Walk across green grass through dozens of pine trees, and you come to one of the wildest beaches in Albufeira. Praia dos Arrifes, locally known as Praia dos Três Penecos, is a small beach with three massive isolated rock formations emerging majestically from the water. It dominates the line of the horizon and makes this beach feel very exotic and miles away from reality.

The sheltered bay among rugged rocks is one of the smallest bays in the Algarve. To access the beach, there’s a wooden stairway.

Praia da Vila Joya (Xiringuitos)

Praia da Vila Joya (Xiringuitos) is Located at the end of Galé east, 7 Km (4.4 mi) from the Albufeira’s Old Town, the former Praia dos Xiringuitos is one of the smallest beaches in this article.

Praia da Vila Joya still preserves its natural look, the small bay dotted with cliffs topped with lush vegetation has azure water, soft golden sand and exquisite rock formations. It’s truly a hidden gem and definitely one of the most beautiful beaches in Albufeira!

Because many people don’t know Praia da Vila Joya, it’s very serene and you get a feeling of peace the minute you arrive. On the second section there are some pools formed by the rocks on the shore that you can enjoy at low tide.

Praia do Castelo

Praia do Castelo translates to Castle beach, the name refers to a 16th century watchtower that once stood here to protect the coast from the attacks of Barbary pirates from North Africa. There are some remains of the old watchtower near the entrance of the beach.

Praia do Castelo is, yet another gorgeous beach located to the west of Albufeira’s Old town right next to Praia da Coelha, and close to  Armação de Pêra.

There are a number of small bays along the several kilometers of coast here, all of which have the same ochre coloured sandstone cliffs, whilst Praia do Castelo cannot boast any rock arches or sea stacks it is all the same a very pleasant spot offering everything an Algarve beach should.

Being a Blue Flag beach there are plenty of facilities including a small beach restaurant which - "O Pic-Nic" - which serves all the standard fare including some good fish dishes. There are also loungers and parasols available for hire.

This beach is surrounded by cliffs, has a wide stretch of thick golden sand, rocks covered with seaweed and incredible crystal-clear bright green-blue water.

Praia da Oura

Praia da Oura is situated at the bottom of a steep hill in front of the resort village of Oura and is one of Albufeira's best beaches. A long sweep of golden sand backed by a promenade lined with cafes, bars and some nice restaurants the beach here is a little more laid back than those closer to Albufeira town.

The beach itself stretches all the way to neighbouring Praia dos Olhos d’Agua, about 2km (1.3 miles) when the tide is out. So there's plenty of space.

Praia dos Salgados

Set around a kilometer east of the resort of Armação de Pêra is Praia dos Salgados, which covers a large area. It is really just one section of a massive crescent of beach that stretches from the resort, halfway to Albufeira.

Unlike the coast further east, towards Albufeira, with its cliffs and rock formations, Praia dos Salgados is backed by low sand dunes. These are criss-crossed with wooden boardwalks to keep this important conservation area intact.

Set around a kilometer east of the resort of Beyond the dunes is the Salgados Lagoon, an important stopover for many migrating birds and where a number of protected species nest among the reeds and rushes, including red heron, blue-black grassquits, caimans and curlews.

The beach is good for water sports and swimming in addition to surfing and bodyboarding as the sea regularly provides good waves for such activities

Praia do Barranco das Belharucas

Barranco das Belharucas beach is the municipality of Albufeira, Portugal. And is to be found at the westward end of Falésia Beach (which extends over 7 kilometres eastwards as far as Vilamoura), separated from Olhos de Água by rocks that may be skirted round at low tide.

Barranco das Belharucas beach is a wind-protected beach due to high cliffs, with excellent conditions for bathing due to being in a protected ocean currents bay area . The landscape is spectacular, whether enjoyed from the beach, or appreciated from the top of the cliff.

Its odd name comes about due to the cliff at this point, known locally as the "barranco" (ravine) which is sought out by belharucas (European bee-eaters), one of the species of birds that nests here.

During empty tide, the beach of Barranco das Belharucas becomes a beach with quite an expanse of sand and shows an area of shallow water, rocks guarding the water, creating natural pools. Here it is customary to observe the small fish that are trapped in pools of water until the next tide. This creates a very interesting place to walk around and observe the changes in the landscape.

The beach can be accessed in two places either using the main access through a long sand road which is difficult for parking or the second access on foot via a wooden boardwalk.
