Small fish is the king of the Western Algarve from 3rd August to 7th August, when the 13th Sardine Festival takes place in the riverside area of ​​Portimão.

Connoisseurs have 2,200 seats at their disposal, spread over seven restaurants, where they can enjoy a sardine with all the ingredients: homemade bread, pepper salad and baked potatoes with skin and assorted snacks, such as chorizo ​​bread, cheeses and sausages, ice cream and regional sweets.

During the festival, there is also the “Papa Sardinhas” competition, a pastime in which participants have to eat as many grilled sardines as possible for 15 minutes.

With 50,000 visitors the festival has more than a hundred exhibitors, namely national and international handicrafts, regional sweets and agri-food products, not to mention the traditional food and beverage stalls.
